Ghana’s good old highlife musician, Kwaku Agyapong Danemah, known in showbiz circles as Dr. Paa Bobo was reported dead on Saturday at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.
He was believed to be 62.
Paa Bobo is said to have been hospitalized for a few weeks and was even speculated to have died last week until the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) issued a statement to deny the death report.
Paa Bobo’s death comes as a shock because it is almost becoming a trend in showbiz for celebrities to pass away not long after speculations of their death.
“Yes I can confirm to you that Dr. Paa Bobo is dead. He died just this afternoon. His wife confirmed that to me now. I am going to see her and will let the general public know the details of his death,” peacefmonline.com quoted an unnamed family source Saturday afternoon.
Paa Bobo was born at Akyin Maase, in the Eastern Region in 1951. He started his music career in 1968 by learning how to play guitar under the tutelage of Smart Nkansah.
He later became a celebrated award-winning African music legend with over 100 tracks, of which 35 are mega hits. He recorded an estimated 40 albums.
Paa Bobo went on music tours across Nigeria, Ivory Coast, UK, Italy and Holland.
Until his death, he was still very relevant in the Ghanaian highlife genre and a toast at concerts he was invited to.
