THE TEMA General Hospital recorded 18 births at the labour ward on Christmas day.

According to a midwife, who declined to mention her name and who is believed to be in charge of the Maternity ward, 13 of the babies delivered at the hospital on Christmas day were girls and five boys.

She continued that 13 of the babies were delivered through the normal procedure with five of them delivered through Caesarian Section.

All babies and their mothers were doing well with some of them expected to join their families to celebrate the yuletide as at the time DAILY GUIDE visited the place.

Conditions of mothers of babies born through the Caesarian Section were said to be improving.

Madam Janet Arhin, mother of a set of twin girls, could not hide her joy when she told DAILY GUIDE that out of the mothers who delivered on Christmas day, she was the only one who was blessed with a set of twins.

For her, their date was something she would never forget because it marked the date of a famous occasion but it also meant a lot to her family because her set of twins shared the same date with Jesus Christ.

“The exciting thing about having my girls on this date is that I would not have to do so much to make them feel special on their birthdays because every December 25 is always going to be on a special day for my family,” Janet remarked.

The situation was different at the hospital’s mortuary as it recorded eight deaths on the same date.

Four of the deaths were men and three were women with the last said to be a baby.

According to Chief Superintendent Herman, out of all the 21 deliveries, only one male was delivered through caesarian section on Boxing Day.

She advised women in the reproductive age to visit clinics regularly for check-up once they missed their normal monthly periods.

She urged expectant mothers to register with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) so that their bills could be covered by the NHIS during delivery.

Juliana Obeng, Public Relations Officer of the Hospital, appealed to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), philanthropists and corporate entities to adopt the Maternity and Children’s Wards of the Hospital and renovate them regularly.

She also pleaded with government, NGOs and corporate organizations to help provide the facility with an incubator.
