First Lady’s Convoy Kills Woman, 64

Lordina Mahama

One of the vehicles in the convoy of the First Lady, Lordina Mahama, was involved in an accident at Anyinam in the Eastern Region on Saturday, killing one woman and injuring two others.

It is not clear if the First Lady was riding in the convoy when the accident happened.

The driver of the vehicle, a Ford Expedition with registration number GW 907-09, lost control and hit the woman identified as Theresa Bawa, 64, killing her instantly. It also hit Bawa’s granddaughter, Juliana, who is in a critical condition at the regional hospital in Koforidua.

The driver, identified as Mr Ahiadze, 56, was arrested by the police and released later to report again to the police.

The other victim, a bicycle rider, was treated at the Enyiresi Government Hospital and discharged.

The driver alleged that he was crossed by the bicycle rider and in an attempt to avoid hitting him, lost control, hitting the old lady and her grand-daughter who were going home on the other side of the road.

However, the son of Madam Bawa, Alfred Osei Dusu, said the deceased was returning from a nearby plot where she had gone to pluck Okro but was killed by one of the speeding vehicles in the convoy.

“The vehicle ran over her on the pedestrian walkway close to the railway crossing,” he told an Accra-based Oman Fm.

“We heard it was a convoy of Lordina Mahama, wife of the president,” he confirmed and added that the two tyres on the passenger’s side burst before it skidded off the road to hit his mother.

He said the deceased was with her 10-year-old grandchild who survived.

He added that since the incident, the First Lady had not come to meet the family, adding, “It was the District Chief Executive they asked to see us but he also sent a delegation to greet us on Sunday and has not been here personally.”

He said, “We got information that they wanted to have the funeral right away but the family has decided that it should be done after Christmas.”

On October 25, a similar accident involving the speeding convoy of Vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur killed a 65-year-old woman at Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Central Region.
