Couple Killed In Kumasi

GUNNED DOWN! Adu Gyamfi and his wife Georgina Afia Kyerewaa were shot dead yesterday

A man and his wife have been gruesomely murdered at Twedie, a community in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region by unidentified gunmen over an alleged protracted chieftaincy dispute.

Simms Adu Gyamfi, 43, and Georgina Afua Kyerewaa, 38, were shot to death in their Honda Civic car with registration number DVLA 4559- 12 in front of their house.

The Crime Officer of the Asokwa District Police Command, ASP Denteh Simon, who confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE, said the couple was killed at about 10:30pm when the woman alighted to enable her husband to park the car.

He said the gunmen fled after committing the dastardly act which ignited tension and insecurity in the locality for hours.

Though no arrests had been made as at the time of filing this report, the crime officer said the police had begun investigations into the incident.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the police, according to ASP Denteh, linked the bloody attack to a 15-year-old protracted chieftaincy dispute involving two main factions, with the late Adu Gyamfi leading one of the factions.

He said the impasse which had virtually divided the royal family of the community was before a committee set up with the responsibility of ensuring an amicable settlement.

Sources indicated that the killers might have been charged to carry out the operation as it appeared the committee’s verdict would favour the deceased.

ASP Denteh Simon said the deceased was threatened on a number of occasions prior to the horrific incident.

Alex Amoako aka Oly, an opinion leader in the community, said that Adu Gyamfi died instantly while his wife died while being rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi for medical attention.

According to the opinion leader, who is a newspaper vendor, four shots were heard during the attack, compelling residents close to the scene to take to their heels.

Alex Amoako said the late Adu Gyamfi was an elder of the Assemblies of God Church at Twedie and was generally said to be a good man.
