AMERICAN SWIMMERÂ Michael Phelps, on Tuesday printed his name in letters of gold when he became the most decorated sportsman in the Olympic Games history.
Phelps became the first person in history to win 19 medals at the Olympics, surpassing the previous 18 medal haul held by Larisa Latynina, a gymnast of the former Soviet Union.
The American legend, in an emotional speech attributed his feat to his mother’s unflinching support.
Phelps went ahead to refer to his mother whose name he did not mention as the “best woman in the world”.
The American swimmer entered the London 2012 Olympics with 17 medals to his credit and was eager to add to his tally.
Phelps, who is the most talked-about sportsman at the London Olympics currently, started off by wining silver.
He then swam home to victory in the men’s relay, adding a gold medal to his long haul of medals.
This great achievement catapulted him into the record books as the most decorated Olympian in history.
