Three officials of the Ghana Swimming Association (GSA) recently returned from a three-day marathon FINA Open Water Swimming School in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The three-man Ghanaian delegation was headed by Mr Kwami kpodoh, Technical Director of the GSA. The other members of the delegation were Mrs Helena Williams (treasurer) and Mr. Kweku Sam Brew (executive member).
Mr. Theophilus Wilson-Edzi, president of the Ghana Swimming Association (GSA) told DAILY GUIDE SPORTS in an interview that the three were now certified FINA Open Water Swimming (OWS) officials. “This will help guide the GSA officials to be in line with the international standards in the OWS”.
The training was indeed an intensive one with examinations at the tail end of the programme.
This was to ensure that anybody certified by FINA deserved it.
The officials are awaiting their results as the first certified Open Water Swimming Officials from Ghana so they could officiate in all international competitions.
The training was held on the 29th June to 1st July, 2012, and hosted at the conference room of Garden Court Hotel, OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, with the three participating countries being Ghana, Namibia and South Africa.
The course was, among other things, meant to expand the number of officials and enhance the quality of the existing officials so that a standard, universal practice of judging is applied across all Fina territories & members; ensure that judges and officials are up-to-date on the current rules, and their application; and that a pool of suitably qualified officials is maintained to officiate Fina events & events within the various member federations.
