The Young Patriots, a youth wing of opposition New Patriotic has alleged, that its reliable sources within government have indicated that construction works on the Nsawam-Suhum road have been left in the current horrible state, because of political reasons.

According to the Young Patriots, work on the project has been delayed because that stretch of the road is in the Eastern Region, the home region of the flag-bearer of New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Works on the Nsawam-Suhum road, which formed part of the Accra-Kumasi highway project have been delayed mainly due to lack of funding.

President John Evans Atta Mills last week inspected ongoing works on the project, and urged contractors working on delayed portions of the road to speed up work. In spite of the fact that there has been some sturdy progress on the 37.1km Kwafokrom-Apedwa Junction stretch of the highway, President Mills expressed deep concern in respect of the inconvenience that motorists go through, and entreated the contractors to do everything possible to ease the suffering of commuters.

President Mills reminded the contractors of the importance of that road, which is under the Accra-Kumasi Dualisation Project, and urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure that the project was not delayed unduly.

That notwithstanding, the Young Patriots in a release issued on Wednesday, 18th July 2012, accuse government of deliberately causing the delay in completion of the project.

“The wickedness and vindictiveness of the President has led to several development projects meant for the Eastern region including road construction, Hospitals, Schools being denied the region. The lack of educational facilities for instance, led to the region recording an unprecedented level of basic school intakes in year 2011”, the statement claimed.

The group has thus hinted of series of demonstrations beginning Monday, August 6, 2012 in Koforidua, to demand the Eastern region’s fair share of development.

“The Young Patriots will on Monday 6th August, hold a gargantuan rally through major streets in the Eastern Regional Capital of Koforidua to demand the Eastern Regions share of Development. It is unfair for the region to suffer lack of development because the main opposition candidate hails from there”, it said.

The demonstration will be preceded by an Open Forum on Friday 3rd August, at the Ascension Hall in Koforidua.

According to the group, the forum will be used to “elaborate and enumerate the development projects which have either been taken away from the region or stalled because of Nana Addo”.
