Management of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a waste management giant, yesterday outdoored another initiative to rid the country of filth.

The company launched what is touted as the ‘Zoom Alliance,’ an initiative intended to enhance waste collection.

The programme is intended to leverage the domestic capacity of the parent company (Zoomlion) to assist other sanitation service providers to boost service delivery for the benefit of stakeholders.

At a colourful launch in Accra, Managing Director of Zoom Alliance, Haruna Sule, said the principle underlying the programme would be transparency, mutual trust, respect and mutual benefit since it entails the establishment of mutually beneficial relationship between the company and other firms involved.

This is expected to be based on an assessment of operational structures, technical assets and revenue generation.

In order to determine the extent of assistance required, he said “the major objectives of the project are to ensure that all residents of Accra have access to waste storage containers, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable waste collection services as well as identify and implement permanent solutions for waste.â€

The company has imported 200 trucks and 300 other tricycles for the intended purpose into the country.

On his part, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu-Amposah, who lauded the initiative, decried the level of filth in the country.

He urged waste collection companies to take advantage of the initiative.

“I also want to urge assembly members that in your respective electoral areas take advantage of these facilities; put small groups together, take some of these facilities and then manage the waste in your own electoral area and then generate employment also for the youth.â€

The Minister said government would soon take delivery of $11million equipment from the Ashok Company in India for onward distribution to selected Municipalities and Districts to augment existing facilities.

Present at the programme were Greater Accra Regional Minister, Afotey Agbo, Accra Mayor, Dr. Alfred Vanderpuye and Mayor of Kumasi, Samuel Sarpong, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), traditional rulers and other stakeholders.
