NURSING STUDENTS at the Community Health Nursing Training School at Fomena in the Adansi North district of the Ashanti region on Friday presented GH¢1,000 worth of consumer goods and GH¢500 cash to the Patmos Children’s Home in the district.
Moses Arthur, President of the Students Representative Council (SRC) said the donation was one way of paying their dues to society and addressing the social welfare needs of the orphans.
“It is not enough to talk about the plight of these unfortunate children in our society without addressing their needs. Improving the social welfare of vulnerable groups like orphans is also one step forward in addressing the challenges of society,” said Arthur.
Stephen Jeyile, a tutor at the school said the students took up the challenge to contribute GH¢1,500 towards the upkeep of the orphans as part of their SRC week celebration.
He said the consumer goods comprised milk, sardines, mackerel, beverages and toiletries.
Akua Mmeray, founder of the orphanage, who received the gift items on behalf of the 20 orphans, pledged the money would be put to good use and for the benefit of the children.
“With this kind of support, we feel that these children will know that society cares for them. Everything brought to this home will be used for the benefit of the children. We deem this gesture as the greatest love to be shown by students who themselves need these provisions,” she noted.
The nursing students marked this year’s SRC week celebration with the theme: “Promoting Academic, Moral and Professional Excellence in Training Community Health Nurses – The Role of Students.”
Some activities undertaken were a float, talk on health, inter-house competition, variety show and old school night among others.
